Head turn

He was looking backwards

And I was looking forward.

Our eyes met and I stared

Out the window until

He turned back his head.

It would not have happened

If I was paying attention.

Maybe the second time

our eyes will meet and we

won’t have to turn our heads.

How do you put out

a burning cross in the dark starless night of Kentucky?

Do you take away the oxygen and smother it with your own burning heart?

Do you douse it with the waters of righteousness?

Do you remove the lighter and let it smolder till the last ember is snuffed out?

If you wait, it will burn the forest down and we will have no place to live.
